Standing Committees 2025/2026
Advisory Council for Physics Department
Steve Alexander
Steve earned his B.A. in Mathematics in 1978 and his Ph.D. in Physics in 1982, both from the University of Texas at Austin. Following postdoctoral research at Texas A&M Galveston and the University of Florida, he applied his expertise in atomic and molecular calculations to the development of advanced gamma-ray detectors at Constellation Technology Corporation, a start-up focused on nuclear nonproliferation tools. Returning to academia, Steve held faculty positions at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Texas Pan American, where he has continued to apply Variational Monte Carlo methods to a variety of problems. Since 2003, he has held the Robert Sherman Lazenby Chair in Physics at Southwestern University, where he is recognized for both his teaching and his ongoing research program.
Carlos Avila
Carlos received his B.A. in Mathematics 1962 and his M.A. in Physics in 1965, both at the University of Texas at Austin. He then spent three years at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Whippany, New Jersey. At Bell he worked on the Nike-X anti-ICBM system developing and evaluating radar discrimination computer algorithms for incoming warhead identification. He then heard the call of California and moved there in 1968 where he worked for Scientific Data Systems (Later Xerox Data Systems) for seven years before joining Hewlett-Packard in 1975. There he held various positions in marketing, manufacturing and R&D, before retiring in 2000. His last ten years at HP were involved in technology transfer of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) surface mount technology (SMT) from the R&D lab to the various HP manufacturing sites throughout the world.

He was an organizer of the APS Local Links Austin chapter, has served on the APS Committee on Membership, and is an APS Mentoring Fellow.
Josiah Hoskins
UT-alumna, PhD in Chemical Engineering with a BS and MS in Chemistry at UGA. Throughout his career integrating software and physical processes have always been keys to his success. As a researcher he wrote AI code for seismic-guided reservoir mapping at Schlumberger. Later as Director of Research at Rockwell Automation he and his team invented and developed object-oriented controls software for manufacturing. Since 2010 Josiah has been working on accessibility within the Design Division at IBM. He has worked on many projects such as an AI-enhanced accessibility web browser plugin and an iOS Mobile Accessibility Checker. Recently he is team lead for the IBM Equal Access Accessibility Checker (available on the Chrome and Firefox stores).
