Abstract
Nearly two decades ago, the emergence of nanotechnology promised insulation material in which the thermal and electrical conductivity could be selected independently. This capability makes possible smaller, lighter, less costly and more environmentally friendly insulation. Today, as needed for the growth in electrification, this promise is being met. The benefits and approach are demonstrated via summaries of the physics-based innovations required to develop two different novel materials, with roots in the legacy solutions. Progress required understanding and exploiting the underlying physics and chemistry of aging and failure. The talk highlights applying physics to advance technology for the benefit of humanity.
